The company started with Agri-based industries like Jute, Sugar, Breweries and slowly moved in the Infrastructure space over the past decade. Now the GMR group interests lie in areas of Airports, Energy, Highways and Urban Infrastructure.

GMR Group is developing airport cities on the commercial lands available around its airports in Delhi, Hyderabad and Goa.
In International market, it operates Mactan Cebu International Airport in The Philippines and New Heraklion International Airport in Greece in 2017.

GMR Varalakshmi Foundation started a vocational training center in Delhi in October 2009 with the purpose of empowering urban youth. The focus of the Centre is on imparting good quality skill training along with life skill inputs and facilitation of suitable placement opportunities for the trainees.
GMRVF has created State-of-the-Art residential vocational training facilities equipped with classrooms, workshops, kitchens and dormitories, library and seminar hall. The centre is located near to IGI Gate No-15; at Shahbad Muhhamadpur; Dwarka. The centre is well equipped to provide 7-8 short-term vocational trainings programs at any point of time. The main criteria for selection are the economic background and the educational qualifications of the students. Preference is given to trainees from Mehram Nagar and other areas near the airport, and for youth from Savda Ghevra.
